Goodreads Synopsis :

When kingdom come, there will be one.

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

This book would have to be one of my favourite reads from 2016. That ending though!! Ugh!!
I need the next book STAT!!!!

The book starts off slow and there is a lot of characters, so if you aren’t paying attention you will be left behind! But soon enough you get swept up in this amazing world!

Three Black Witches are born in a glen,
sweet little triplets
will never be friends.

Three Black Witches, all fair to be seen

two to devour

and one to be queen

This book is the perfect start to, what I believe will be, an amazing series. Super excited for it!! In this book we get to know and grow to love our three Queens, Mirabella, Arsinoe and Katharine. Whilst each sister has a unique talent, their talents vary in strength. This leads to numerous issues during the book.

The island of Fennbirn sounds like such a dark, terrible, yet magical place and Kendare has done well to bring it to life. Throughout the book you learn about Fennbirn, its inhabitants and the traditions that are upheld on the island. Which of course includes the the triplet Queens and only one being allowed to live. You really question what would happen if they all lived and the strongest became Queen? But that would not make for a dark, intriguing story. Amiright! 😂

The character development throughout the story is superb. Kendare really brings not only the Queens to life, but also all the other characters within the story.
We get to learn about each Queen and the families they are living with. Personally I love Mirabella, not because she is the strongest but because of how she treats others. Katharine I feel sorry for, she does not deserve to be treated that way. Arsinoe is definitely my least favourite. Whilst she has redeeming qualities, I feel that she can be very selfish and self centred.

Heads up… There is a love triangle in the book and a little bit of Insta-love. I however blame Arsinoe and her actions for this Insta-love that leads to the love triangle. Y’all know I dislike Insta-love, but there is a genuine reason behind this so I’m okay with it haha.

All up this book is well written, dark and extremely enjoyable. I can not wait to see what the rest of this series brings 😊😍

I would like the thank the author, publishers, Edelweiss and NetGalley for the copy of this book.

About the author :

Goodreads | Blog

So, I write books. The Anna Dressed in Blood duo is horror, The Goddess War trilogy is mythology, and Sleepwalk Society is contemporary, because the world don’t move to the beat of just one drum. What might be right for you, may not be right for some. Love to read, too. Fiction, philosophy, good books, bad books, because you take the good you take the bad you take them both and there you have a stack of books and stuff. I mean, you’ve got to be adventurous. There’s more to life that what you’re living, so take a chance and face the wind.

There’s more coming soon like Scary Out There and THREE DARK CROWNS so don’t waste another minute on your cryin. We’re nowhere near the end.

My likes include animals, food, and nostalgia. I mean, whatever happened to predictability? The milkman, the paperboy, the evening TV? Used to be everywhere you look, there’s a heart, a hand to hold on to.

Anyway, I love to hear from readers so drop me a line here or at my website and we’ll talk about friends to know, and ways to grow, and how if you threw a party you would see that the biggest gift would be from me and the card attached would say, thank you for being a friend.

We can also talk about all the sitcom theme songs in this bio. Sha la la la.

      1. Oh, I loved Anna Dressed in Blood!! I did a review of it back in October. I bought the sequel but haven’t read it yet…it might have to wait until the Halloween Read-a-Thon of 2017, hehe.

  1. Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing some of my thoughts with this one. I absolutely loved the world and characters the author was building. I know so many others felt that this was so slow and lackluster, but I just could not help getting excited about the full potential of this all.

I love her writing and could not get enough! I immediately ordered Anna Dressed in Blood haha. My only complaint about this ending is waiting.. oh the freaking wait ❤ And seriously, you have the way cooler cover haha.

    Love the review!

  2. Well, you’re gonna have it in your possession, too! I didn’t know you owned this one as well. Now you’ll have two copies of this!
I’m so glad you liked this bc I have seen mixed reviews, but I know you and I are simpatico when it comes to our book likes.
So, I got book mail today! I haven’t opened it yet bc mi madre and I got into a fight over the shipping costs (what’s with all the Spanish? Idk…) and she didn’t know it was $122 to ship both your and Anne’s package…mainly bc I didn’t tell her, I put the cost on the “Christmas” cc she gave me to shop with, and though I told her not to look at the bill until after Christmas (so she wouldn’t see what I was buying her for gifts, obvi), she took a peek and saw the charge. So opening book mail in front of her hasn’t seemed like a good idea, especially when she thinks I’m buying it and not winning it like I’ve been.
    But I digress.
I think it’s my Truthwitch copy, which also is with the lady who ran the giveaway’s own book, so two books in one! Then I got something from Penguin First To Read I think…I entered for two books but only got approved for one. I think it’s a historical fiction book? I don’t remember. But it’s the first book I have received from a program (SocialBookCo keeps snubbing me and I don’t know why, but blogging for books offered my Holding Up The Universe and I requested it, so free book that I want to read! Though I foolishly didn’t notice that they also had A Shadow Bright And Burning, and I couldn’t change my request after it was done and they only had four copies and then they were gone…I totally prob made the wrong pick, but I do want to read Holding Up The Universe and I have A Shadow from the library…but I would’ve owned it…I am so mad at myself, lol).
Wow, long response huh? I prob should’ve just tweeted this all to you, lol!
    I guess it’s been a long day!
TL; DR…I loved your review, received some book mail, and got yelled at.
    How was your day? 😂🤣😂
    🤡🤜🤛🤤

    1. Hahaha geez you make me laugh.
I got an arc from NetGalley and Edelweiss because I really wanted the book and requested it on both. It took me awhile to get around to reading it.
How’d it end up being $122!!! That’s not bad for two overseas packages.
My partner used to get grumpy at me when books kept showing up. I was like I promise I won them!!! Just show her the email or post saying you won the book that what I ended up doing to stop him annoying me 🤣🤣
Can’t wait to see what books you have ended up with. Penguin First to Read sounds like a great thing. I wish we had it over here. I haven’t heard anything from SocialBookCo after The Shadow Queen. Maybe after the holidays.
I can only get eBooks from Blogging for Books 😒 damn shipping rates. I’m sure you will love Holding up the Universe!!
My day was goood I wrapped all the Christmas presents for my mum cos she hadnt wrapped any.

      1. It sounds like a nice day to me!
I offered to show the receipt to my mom and she declined. Whatev.
I just didn’t know how much shipping was….but now that I do know, I’ll be making sure my packages aren’t as heavy.
        Thanks darling.😘😘😘
